South Pacific was a show I didn't audition for. I had to be in a wedding during one of the performances so I figured this show was one I would have to pass on. And also, 110 in the shade was still going on at the time. But then the call came.
The director asked if I would come to a special audition. They still had a big role left open. Well, I thought I would at least try out and see what happened. What happened was they wanted me for the role of Lt. Cable. I had never seen South Pacific but I knew right away, it was a great part. But alas, the problem of the wedding still persisted. Love is always getting in the way of things. Fortunately, the friend was very understanding and let me out of the wedding. The part was mine.
So, even before 110 in the Shade closed, I began rehearsing for South Pacific. It was a great cast. Lt. Cable was an excellent part for me, but could be pretty draining having to release all those different emotions every night. Plus, with 3 different songs to sing, I could never really relax and enjoy things until I died each night. Isn't that always the case?
I've never been to an AA meeting, but if I ever went, I wouldn't be surprised to find a lot of theatre performers there. South Pacific had its share of parties, and the party goers sure had their share of well, as I believe the Flintstones used to call it, "Cactus Juice". I must say though, it is amusing to watch the difference it brings out in the cast members at the parties. I guess the show never really stops.
It was unfortunate that I had to miss my friend's wedding to be in South Pacific, but I had such a great time in that show. The girl situation did get a little tricky in that show. But hey, that's what makes it exciting!
